How to eat healthily at a barbecue

Whether you have a posh www.weberbbq.co.ukhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif barbecue or a humble disposable one there is no doubt about it, food tastes better cooked out of doors. The only problem is that if you are on a diet or trying to watch your cholesterol levels a lot of food traditionally cooked at a barbecue can be unhealthy.

Too much red meat can increase the likelihood of heart disease and certain cancers so many people are avoiding steak and burgers when it comes to choosing their meat for the barbecue. Pork on the other hand is high in protein and low in fat and Vit B, so long as you choose a lean cut such as tenderloin or loin chops. There are many delicious marinades which make your pork taste even better on the barbecue. Have a look for recipes for barbecues online or buy a bottle of marinade from the supermarket.

Chicken too is a good healthy choice for a barbecue so long as you remove the skin before eating as this is where you will find most of the fat content. Make sure that your chicken is thoroughly cooked to avoid salmonella issues. The easiest type of chicken to cook safely on the barbecue is boned.

We all know that we should eat more fish and what better way to enjoy it than on the barbecue? Monkish is a nice firm fish so excellent for using in kebabs. If you are using wooden skewers soak them in water to avoid them burning. Salmon too is good grilled on the barbie either as it is or wrapped in a foil parcel with a bit of lemon.

Even if you are watching your waistline it is easy to fall prey at a barbecue to the temptation of potato salad and coleslaw, both of which are full of mayonnaise. You could try using a low fat mayonnaise or serve an alternative such as a green salad and boiled new potatoes or couscous.

What’s for dinner tonight?! If one of your new year’s resolutions is to cook more from scratch and eat less takeaways then here are some ideas to inspire you:
Meat cook
by Mandajuice
  1. A traditional roast dinner. Whether it is Sunday or not, most families love a good roast dinner. Prepare ahead so it isn’t too onerous a task after work mid week.
  2. Brunch time. Go all continental and serve ham and cheese with a range of bread, cereals and fruit. Lay everything out on your kitchen worktops and invite everyone to help themselves.
  3. A winter barbecue. The sun may be hiding but fire up the patio heater, wrap up warm and have some burgers on the decking. Fun for a weekend with the family.
  4. Stir-fry heaven. Quick and easy and a good way to use up bits and bats from the fridge. Cut meat into fine strips for ease and try a range of sauces from sweet chilli to black bean.
  5. The all day breakfast. A welcome sight on a cold day: get into bacon and sausages grilled or fried and gather together for a feast.
  6. Try something different. Seek out specialist suppliers and serve up a new taste from rabbit to ostrich to ox cheeks. You never know, you just might like it.
  7. Revamp the kitchen. Fed up of food being burnt on the outside and raw in the middle? Ditch the old oven and get a new kitchen from Wrenkitchens.com.
  8. Slow cooking for tenderness. Dust off the slow cooker and put it to good use this winter. Great for stews and curries, meat will be incredibly tender to eat.
  9. Whiz it up. Blend minced beef fine in bolognaise sauce for pasta to get it past the kids: throw in a whole range of veggies too and they’ll never know!
  10. Fall in love with soup. Perfect for winter and healthy too. Ditch the sandwiches at lunchtime and take a flask to work instead.

It's not too late to start a New Year detox…

Just because the end of January is edging ever closer, doesn't mean it's too late to start doing a detox for the New Year.

bread

It may be the end of the month soon, but you needn't worry – you'll still feel the full effects of taking things easy and cutting down on those unhealthy foods even if you start now.

Just remember, there are various different levels of doing a detox. If you don't really think you're capable of cutting out everything from crisps to white bread and chocolate, you could just give them up for a couple of days every week. Or, try just limiting your intake of one of your favourite treats, like alcohol for example.
If you do that and you give yourself a deadline when you can start eating your favourite things again, it'll be something to aim for and, if you're particularly competitive, you're bound to feel a great sense of achievement at the end of it.You can save some money if you go on a detox too – which you're bound to be grateful for later in the year. Why not make your own lunch for work with healthy sandwich fillings or even your own soup? The savings will soon begin to mount up and when your detox period is over, you'll be able to buy yourself a nice new outfit to show off your fantastic figure! The best thing is, you don't need to detox for too long. If you want to just feel a little healthier, you can get away with just doing a few weeks or a month. Or, if you want to extend it further than perhaps consider detoxing for just a couple of days every week. You're bound to feel healthier at the end of it, but as long as you eat a balanced diet all of the time, you'll really reap the benefits anyway. So what are you waiting for? Get detoxing now!

There's no need to diet – just cut down on treats

To contact us Click HERE
I don't know about you, but I find it pretty much impossible to go on a diet. When you enjoy eating food and you're a fussy eater, there's nothing more difficult than trying to cut out all the things you love from your daily meals.

You don't really need to diet to lose weight and stay healthy though – you can just limit the amount of sweet treats and unhealthy snacks in order to do that.

Rather than starving yourself or embarking on the not-so-appetising cabbage soup diet, why not just reduce the number of chocolate bars you eat each week or just try to snack on crisps a bit less?
You might want to start taking your own lunch into work, made with homemade bread – then at least you'll know what ingredients and how much salt goes into making it.
Sandwiches are a fantastic thing to have at lunchtimes, as they're bound to fill you up properly and if you go for decent bread and healthy fillings, they'll help you lose some weight in the long term too.
Just take a look online at some sandwich recipes to get some inspiration, then put together the healthiest bits and pieces you can and presto, you've got a healthy snack for lunch!
If you need a sweet treat to get you through the day, fruit is definitely the way forward. Just stock up on some apples and bananas, or whatever else takes your fancy, and munch away whenever the moment takes you!
Nuts are another fantastic thing to have to hand, so long as there's very little salt on them – they'll tide you over to your next meal without a doubt!

Top Lunch Ideas

Making a packed lunch for yourself or your children everyday can get really dull! To liven it up a bit, here are a few suggestions of foods to include which are tasty and nutritious and you just might not have thought of…

Pack a mini-salad. If a salad alone is not enough to fill you up then compliment your sandwich with a tasty side dish. Go for simple cucumber and tomato or add some extras like avocado or peppers.

  • Get your vegetable intake up. Veggies are a great way to fill up and give energy, and eaten raw they retain all their natural nutrients. Try grated carrot with raisins or beetroot simply on its own – have the Fairy Liquid on standby however as it stains like mad!

  • Five a day. Make sure you include foods which contribute to your 5 a day count. Fresh squeezed juice, a piece of fruit or how about natural yogurt with berries added to it.

  • Avoid the bread. If bread makes you feel bloated then switch to wraps or pittas instead to stave off hunger. Cold pasta or rice salad is another great alternative.

  • Super soup. Home made soup packed with healthy ingredients is easy to transport in a flask and is great for dieters and the health conscious. Warm and filling, soup can match your mood from chicken broth to curried veg!

  • Go for quick meals. If you work from home or can get to a proper kitchen then how about a jacket potato with a variety of toppings. Easy to pop in the oven and no time at all to plate up.

  • Left over central. In cold weather a hot meal at lunchtime is very welcome so if you have access to a microwave then why not use up your dinner leftovers the following day.

    Being Tongue Tied

    To contact us Click HERE

This is a blog post that I wrote on my phone this past week on Thursday, September 13, 2012.  I have not had a chance to post it until now.

I've only been a mother for two short weeks. Everyday it feels like I am learning something new about my daughter and myself.

One week ago we found out that Olivia was tongue tied. It has made it very hard for her to nurse and she has not been gaining weight like a new baby should. Everyone I know has said that this condition is fairly common in newborns and should not take long to fix. That's easy for them to say! Being a new Mom, nothing feels common and normal.

At our two week well visit we found out that Olivia had not gained much weight at all and that we needed to have a procedure done to release her tongue as soon as possible. Currently, I'm sitting in the waiting room for an ear, nose, and throat doctor that I've never met, but I am supposed to trust with my baby's life.

I don't trust this doctor right now. However, I do trust the Lord and that's ultimately what matters most. God knew I would be in this situation being asked to trust Him in this way. I am so thankful that I can trust in God above everything else.

Thankfully, the procedure went well! I think I cried just as much as Olivia. I tried explaining the the doctor and his nurse that it was just my hormones going a little crazy! They were very understanding and took good care of Olivia and me.

I'm sure that this is just one of many situations that I will find myself in where I am asked to trust God with the life of my daughter. It's not easy, but that's what Olivia needs from me. I could worry, fret, and work myself into a frenzy. However, that is not what I want to teach Olivia. I want her to see God as trustworthy because I trust Him and Jon trusts Him.

Olivia has already started eating better which is an answer to prayer! Please continue to pray that Olivia gains enough weight to get back up to her birth weight.

I want to thank you all for your comments and emails of encouragement during this time in my life!! I have been overwhelmed by the love that you have shown to me and my family during this time! I am so blessed to have such amazing blog readers/followers!

The last blog post I wrote was about how Olivia is/was Tongue Tied. We had a procedure done last Thursday to fix this problem and it has helped so much. Olivia is eating much better and I am hopeful that she will have gained more weight by her next doctor's appointment. Olivia can also suck on a pacifier now, which helps to soothe her during the wee hours of the night! We are so thankful that this procedure is helping Olivia in so many ways!

Olivia's first time at Weight Watchers!

This past Saturday, Olivia and I dropped by our local Weight Watchers center. They were hosting a Lose for Good 2012 event and we thought it would be the perfect time for us to drop by!! We had fun visiting with my coworkers and other Weight Watchers friends. Olivia did a great job right and was only fussy right before we left, because it was time for her to eat!

I am enjoying my maternity leave, but I am looking forward to the day when I can be back in the meeting room again with my Weight Watchers members. I've missed being at Weight Watchers meetings every Tuesday night and Saturday morning.

This may have been Olivia's first time at Weight Watchers, but it will not be her last!

    Olivia 4 Week Update

    To contact us Click HERE
Today, Olivia is four weeks old!!

    4 weeks old

Wow! Where did the time go? On the one hand it seems like it has been a very long four weeks, because we have had a lot of trouble getting Olivia to gain weight. Olivia has been to see the doctor every week of her life as we try to figure out why she is not gaining weight. We have begun to supplement with formula to see if that will help her get back up to her birth weight.

On the other hand, these last four weeks have flown by faster than I ever imagined. We have had lots of family come and visit like Olivia's Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Friends! We have had a lot of late nights and early mornings. I cannot say that I am used to this kind of crazy schedule, but I am doing what I need to so that I can take care of my baby girl. I enjoy all the time I get to spend with Olivia, even if it is in the middle of the night.

Olivia at her doctor's appoinment today.

We had another doctor's appointment today and Olivia GAINED weight!! Praise the Lord!! After four long weeks Olivia is finally back up to her birth weight and beyond!! This morning she weighed in at 7 pounds 10 ounces, which is 1 pound up from what she weighed last week!! It is safe to say that I am one proud Mama!!

There are a lot of firsts that have taken place in Olivia's life over these last four weeks.

Here are just a few things that Olivia has done over the last four weeks.
~ Olivia had her first exploding diaper.
~ Olivia is able to suck on a pacifier by herself.
~ Olivia slept through the night for six hours straight.
~ Olivia went to Sunday school one week and big church the next and did not cry! However, she did cry when we went to Youth Group.
~ Olivia had her first doctor's appointment.
~ Olivia went for her first walk in the park in her jogging stroller.
~ Olivia went to Weight Watchers.
~ The first book we read to Olivia was an Elephant and Piggie book.
~ The first Disney movie I watched with Olivia was Beauty and the Beast.

Please continue to pray that Olivia will gain weight over these next few weeks and months. Also, pray for me (Jen) as I begin to start working from home and taking care of Olivia at the same time. Finally, please pray that God will provide everything we need!

Instead, I have been trying to focus on taking care of my daugther and adjusting to life as a new Mom. However, now I am ready to get back on plan! I have been trying to figure out when would be the best time to start following the Weight Watchers PointsPlus program again. I keep telling myself I will start tomorrow, but then I never do!

Watch out for Cupid's arrow, or better yet, avoid the greeting card aisle. Valentine's Day is approaching and love is in the air. For many hopeless romantics out there, February 14th is a wonderful, starry-eyed occasion to give and receive extra tokens of affection like flowers, chocolates, and of course, store-bought or homemade valentines. History? I got your history

    Large Baking Sheet

Okay okay, if you must know Why we celebrate this silly holiday called Valentine's Day, let me interpret briefly. Valentine's Day began with a priest, St. Valentine. Rumor has it that during the third century in Rome, Emperor Claudius Ii decided that singular men made better soldiers than married men and thus outlawed marriage for young men. Recognizing the injustice of this, St. Valentine continued to marry young citizen in inexpressive and was imprisoned and ultimately killed. Other rumors say that St. Valentine helped Christians escape harsh Roman prisons and that he may have even sent a love letter from prison to an admired woman, signed "From Your Valentine." As St. Valentine was later a favorite saint in France and England, Valentine's Day became popularly renowned in the seventeenth century. In 1840, the first mass-produced "valentines" appeared in America. Today, 85% of Valentine's Day cards are purchased by women. Is this because men are buying flowers?

Some Essentials for Spoiling Loved Ones

Flower Meanings- Every flower has a meaning, many of which have endured for centuries. So unless you want to give a woman the seal for mourning this Valentine's Day, make sure you look into these meanings before picking a bouquet. Not only will you have the perfect gesture with the flowers, but you'll impress that extra man with your knowledge. He or she will think you are quite thoughtful (just don't let on I told you).

Amaryllis or Iris- Both of these flowers are perfect for the artists or actors you know. Amaryllis is dramatic and the iris is inspiring.

Carnation- To be blunt, many women view carnations as a "filler flower," but if you know this man likes carnations go with yellow or pink. These express cheerfulness and gratitude respectively.

Gardenia or Day Lily- Symbolizing joy and enthusiasm respectively, these are great universal flowers to brighten anyone's Valentine's Day.

Lilac- Have a serious case of puppy love? Lilacs are the seal for first love. Your spouse or fiancé will giggle.

Orange Blossoms- Do you have a friend or considerable other trying to get pregnant? Or one that has recently become pregnant? Orange blossoms are the seal for fertility.

Orchid or Hibiscus- As would be expected, orchids and hibiscus symbolize delicate beauty. Depending on the person, this can whether be touching or somewhat offensive.

Pansy, Yellow or Red Tulip- While all these flowers are gestures of love, the pansy is the least strong, and the red tulip is a great first declaration. Yellow denotes a hopeless romantic devotion.

Rose- Red roses are the extreme gesture of passionate love. If you have only been dating a short time, this is too strong a gesture. White roses are a seal of lucidity (making them particularly favorite at weddings). Pink roses symbolize friendship. A combination of red and white denote unity, manufacture them perfect for a married couple of many years.

Sunflower- These unique flowers show adoration. You can't help but smile when you see a sunflower.

    Chocolate

Melting Chocolate- Because chocolate is very delicate to heat, you have to melt chocolate slowly, well-removed from heat. always heat chocolate over low heat or it will speedily become an unappetizing mass. Use a duplicate boiler, or place the saucepan with chocolate on top an additional one saucepan with boiling water on the stovetop. Keep in mind that chocolate will continue to melt even after removing it from a heat source, so be just not to overcook.

    • Unsweetened chocolate will truly liquidize when melted, but sweetened chocolate must be continually stirred.

    • Chocolate flavored coating contains cocoa and vegetable oil, rather than cocoa butter. Coatings are favorite because they are easier to use for things like dipping, but the taste and capability are nowhere near real chocolate.

    For the Kids

    Cherry Bubbles

Sweeten bath-time for the kids or for yourself with this yummy recipe.

    Ingredients

    1/2 C. Unscented shampoo

    12 drops cherry fragrance oil

    2 drops red food coloring

    1/2 tsp. Salt

    3/4 C. Water

    Directions

Mix together the shampoo and water in a jar. Add the salt and stir again until the combination thickens up. Add the cherry oil and the red food coloring and stir the combination thoroughly once more. Bottle the combination until ready to use in your bath. To use; add 1 Tbs. To running bath water. Soak as desired.

Crafts for Kids (Compliments of our Rsvp writer Sarah Potts)

Valentines- Go out and buy a bunch of colored building paper and have a "card making" station. Have scissors, heart patterns, stickers and markers supplied so the kids can make their family and friends Valentine's Day cards.

Candy Lollipop Flowers- This is a great and non-messy action for children. All you will need is wrapped heart-shaped lollipops that you should be able to find any where in the seasonal section, green chenille stems and scissors. First have the children start at the top of the lollipop stick (just before the end of the sucker) and tightly wrap the chenille stem in a coil colse to the lollipop stick. Once this is done, cut off the extra chenille. You can use the extra piece or an additional one piece of chenille and wrap this colse to the stem as well to make the "leaf," just make sure the leaf is secure. There you go- your child can now have a fun bouquet of tiny hear shaped flowers to give to anyone.

Foam Love Letters- Give your child the gift of love this Valentines Day. These easy to make foam letters spell out the word "love" and would be adorable in any tiny girl's room. Click here for how to make!

Rose Valentine Coffee or Tea Mug- Here's an uncostly Valentine's Day gift that you can make yourself for your extra valentine. It is easy and it is fun, any child could make this for his or her mom. The Web site provides the free, full-sized rose stencil pattern (at right) - or you could use your own romantic theme. Click here for how to make!

    Cooking on a budget

    To contact us Click HERE
If you’re looking for recipe inspiration using ingredients that you already have in the house, then you’ve come to the right place! Cooking needn’t be about spending lots of money on expensive, exotic and unusual ingredients; it can be just as satisfying to whip up something using everyday ingredients.

Some of the foods you probably have in your home can be used to create fabulous recipes that you may have never thought of. And there are plenty of recipes for using up things you already have in that are past their best, so it’s a great way to be frugal with your food as well!
For example, if you have a loaf of bread that is past its best but not mouldy (perhaps just a little too hard for sandwiches), it can be used to make a delicious bread and butter pudding, with sultanas and other basic ingredients that don’t cost a lot but taste delicious! White bread is generally considered best for puddings, but if you want to be that little bit healthier, you can try Best of Both for the taste and texture of white but the wholegrain goodness of wholemeal.
Another great way to create tasty dishes from ingredients you already have in the home is to use tomatoes when they have started to go slightly too soft for salads or sandwiches, to make sauces for pasta dishes. Slightly soft tomatoes actually work better for making sauces than firmer ones, so you can create a wonderfully flavourful sauce for your Bolognese or penne pasta at very little cost. For soups, use vegetables that are still edible but are not super fresh, and use cheap cuts of meat for hearty broths, stews and casseroles.
Experiment with what you already have in the cupboards, fridge and freezers to open up a whole new range of tasty and wallet-friendly recipes that the whole family will enjoy!

Why Eating Beluga Caviar is the Best

    To contact us Click HERE
The Beluga caviar is the best because this is the most sought after by food connoisseurs. These are roes of the prehistoric fish Beluga sturgeon, which is mostly found in the Caspian Sea and from other varieties of sturgeons in the Black Sea Basin and sometimes in the Adriatic. The classic caviar is supplied by Russia and Iran and its price is considered as a luxury commodity, along with Renault paintings, sports cars, and diamonds.

The price tag of the Beluga caviar ranges from $250 to $5000 per kilo and this could be attributed to the sturgeons, which are one of the oldest survivors of the dinosaur era. They are so rare that only about 100 units are caught in a year. To harvest the roes, the sturgeons are caught using nets and are kept alive, so that the eggs will be taken away while the fish is still alive. Otherwise, a chemical that results from death will be put into the eggs and will make them taste bitter.

Beluga caviars are not eaten using metal spoons but spoons made of bone or mother-of-pearl to preserve the taste. They are also served with complimentary foods such as potatoes or blini, partnered with crème fraiche or sour cream. They are served on glass or ceramic jars, and are served on ice to keep its temperature lower than the room temperature. Eating is the best since it provides a delicious thrill that comes with its luxury and exclusivity, and the exquisite taste that caviar brings to the senses.

Getting your children involved in the kitchen is one of the best ways to teach them about good nutrition and to give them life skills which they will use forever. Cooking is also a fantastic activity for family bonding as you can share the creative experience as well as the enjoyment of eating the food afterwards. It is also great for self esteem; imagine the pride your child will have in their achievements if they cook something the whole family can enjoy!

    cooking

So, put down that magazine with the fascinating Beauty Tips article and get ready to do some cooking this teatime when the kids come home from school! If you have more than one child then choose a recipe which involves several tasks so you can share them out. If it is just you and one child then something more complicated may well be possible as you can help them closely every step of the way. Perhaps their favourite meal is the best place to start.

As you prepare the food talk about the different ingredients and how they change from raw components into a finished dish through cooking. Chat about a balanced diet and why a range of nutrients is important for health and growth. If at all possible you could get them to try a new taste too – broadening their experience and palette is always a good idea. If you are struggling to get them interested then try to link healthy eating to a topic they do like: for example a fashion conscious teenage girl may want to know that their skin will improve with a better diet so that when they follow the latest Make up tips they will look at their best.

And finally, make a big deal out of sitting to the table altogether and eating the food which you have all prepared. Remember, the family who eats together, stays together.

Eating yogurt every day is very healthy for your body, especially if you are looking to supplement your diet with protein and calcium. Some people think that yogurt is just a delicious snack with fruits at the bottom, but they do not know the health benefits of eating yogurt. Compared to milk, yogurt has more protein and calcium and is rich in riboflavin and B12.

It improves the body’s natural defense, contains a good amount of phosphorous, and lessens the risk of osteoporosis. Some people have trouble-digesting lactose from milk and other milk products, but live yogurt cultures produce lactase and break down lactose. It is a healthy way to get calcium that the body needs, especially for the people who cannot tolerate milk products.

Because this is such a healthy option, people are now taking the opportunity for yogurt franchise to satisfy the demands. This is a hip and trendy business proposition, and yet, it does not lose the family appeal that everyone keeps coming back for. There are so many franchises to choose from with stalls quickly becoming a favorite among yogurt lovers.

    Feel Good Food

    To contact us Click HERE
We all know that there are certain foods and drinks that have that feel good factor to them. In mid-winter you are drawn towards making rich stews and soups, lots of meals with mashed potatoes and gravy, puddings covered in custard. And in the summer we move towards lighter bites and things that are refreshing. Cucumber, salads, ice cream and sorbets, all take the weight out of a hot humid day.

    Eating

Drinks can do the same thing. If you’ve been out for a walk on a cold winter’s day, you don’t feel like a glass of lemonade when you come in. You want hot chocolate, canned tomato soup, anything piping hot and comfort inducing! And in the summer, an ice cold beer or a glass of wine is just what you need for that early evening drink.

The latest Fosters ad series captures that mood exactly. Brad and Dan, two Aussie guys, are sitting in their yellow beach shack staying cool while the hot sun beats down on a beautiful golden beach. They reach out for a chilled tube of Fosters while the mull over the dilemmas posed to them by hapless British boys on the other end of the Fosters helpline.

And the Fosters advert also makes you feel good as it’s all highly comedic. None of the dilemmas posed by the callers are too serious – they’re those awkward social situations that they’re looking for guidance on, the kind of things you can’t really ask anyone face to face. And the responses from Brad and Dan are great – down to earth, no-nonsense views on life.

Like the case of Tom from High Wycombe who’s got someone standing too close to him in the pub. He’s tried eating pickled eggs, but it hasn’t made this bloke back off. What should he do to get him out of his space? The boys tell him straight: "It’ll take a lot more than that to knock him off his stride. Seriously – if you wanna beat one of these leaners, you’ve gotta be a shouter; shout at him like he’s in the next state."

Fosters latest ads multiply the feel good factor around the golden nectar from Australia – I can’t wait to see what they get Brad and Dan advising on next.

As anyone who has a family to feed will tell you, it can sometimes be difficult trying to please everyone, particularly if you have a few fussy eaters, which, let’s face it, is often the case when it comes to children.

Feeding your kids something that they will enjoy, but which is also good for them, can be hard, especially when you are pushed for time and trying to do a million different things at once! But don’t worry, help is at hand.

Try out this simple yet tasty recipe with your kids and have some fun in the kitchen by experimenting together! You will need:
    * 10 slices of bread, cut into triangles * 50g butter * 50g sultanas or raisins * ¼ tsp cinnamon * ¼ tsp nutmeg * 50 ml cream * 350 ml milk * 2 large eggs * 25g sugar * 1 tsp vanilla extract This is super easy to make and a delicious, filling pudding. It’s a great recipe for using up white bread, but if you want to be extra nutritious, try best of both or wholemeal bread. The method for making bread and butter pudding is the same whichever type of bread you use. Simply grease a baking dish with a small amount of butter and then cover with overlapping triangles of bread, butter side up. You can choose any brand when it comes to your loaf, but a personal favourite is Hovis Bread. Sprinkle with sultanas or raisins and then with nutmeg and cinnamon, then repeat with another layer of bread triangles, dried fruit and the spices. Heat milk and cream gently in a bowl and pour on top of eggs lightly beaten with sugar and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture over the bread, sprinkle a little more sugar on top and then leave to cool for 30 minutes before baking for 40-45 minutes until golden brown. Finally, tuck in and enjoy!

All about starting your own restaurant business

    To contact us Click HERE
If you are thinking of starting your own restaurant business then there are several things you need to take into account before you begin.

    by nedoho

Running your own restaurant business can be a fruitful and very satisfying endeavour, especially if you are passionate about cooking, eating and dining, but it is important that you approach it in the right way to make it work.

Firstly, you will need to think about the location of your restaurant, or restaurants if you are planning on a chain of more than one. If you are hiring an existing location, consider how busy the area is. If the premises were used as a restaurant before then this will of course give you a much clearer idea of how your business will work here.
If you are planning on starting from scratch with brand new premises, then you will need to look into getting planning permission and, again, think about the area: what is the footfall likely to be? Is the demographic one that is likely to spend money on eating out? These are all factors to consider carefully before you begin your restaurant business.
And of course, there is the type of food your restaurant is going to offer! Will you focus on one type of cuisine, such as Italian, Thai, British or Spanish, or will you offer a variety of options? Will your restaurant be priced at the high-end, fine dining end of the market, or will it be a greasy spoon cafe of fast food outlet?
If you are going to be preparing the food yourself, you will need to look into completing a hygiene course, as well as a suitable food course. If you are hiring staff to do the cooking and food preparation then ensure that they have completed the relevant food hygiene and safety courses too.

    Cookware Basics for First-time Cooks

    To contact us Click HERE
Going off to college, first time living on your own, or starting a family can be a thrilling experience or a scary one. Part of the growing up process is leaving the comforts of home such as home-cooked meals and having someone, your mom particularly, to do all things for you. While you may not be able to replicate yet all the good stuff that your mom cooks, you need some basic things to survive if you do not want to waste all your money on take-outs.

Cooking would be easy if you have the necessary pots and pans to cook your dishes with. You might want to have a stockpot to cook pasta and a large saucepan if you are cooking spaghetti for a number of people. You also need a smaller saucepan to reheat leftovers, and a skillet or two. Some prefer a smaller skillet to fry eggs, while you need a larger one to brown meat and sauté stuff.

Your kitchen should have the essential utensils like knives, chopping board, a wooden spoon, silicone spatula, a pasta fork, a ladle, and a can opener. While these are the basics, you might want to add a bakeware to make cookies, garlic bread or a frozen dinner. You could also add a casserole dish, which is very handy for making lots of dishes. You can find all these in a cookware outlet and eventually, you will be adding stuff as you go along until you have a cookware set worthy of a chef’s.

The Many Benefits of Healthy Cooking

    To contact us Click HERE
Those who want to have a healthy lifestyle should not only exercise regularly, eat nutritious foods, and avoid excessive alcohol and tobacco, but must also include healthy cooking. Healthy cooking involves lots of things including planning and preparing meals that use wholesome ingredients and cooking dishes that do not have excessive sodium, sugar or unhealthy fats.

    Photo: vview.co.za
Healthy cooking also incorporates cooking techniques that reduce fat like grilling, placing meat on rack over a baking pan, removing fat from broths, blanching, roasting, and steaming foods. Steaming can preserve the nutritional value of foods like vegetables, instead of frying or boiling. It also encourages the use of healthy alternative ingredients like lentils or beans in place of animal-based proteins.

Eating healthy foods also cost lower since beans are less expensive than meats. Fruits and vegetables do not cost much than most snack foods such as cookies or chips. Steaming or broiling also does not require expensive oils. Cooking at home is also a lot cheaper than dining out with your family. Moreover, parents who include their children in the preparation and planning of their meals will be more educated about nutrition, and they will likely make the right choices about eating.

Eating foods done by poaching, baking, steaming or grilling is healthier since they were not prepared with oil and butter, and this can be helpful in your weight management efforts. Eating healthy is also one way on how to get motivated to work out since healthy cooking can be done by anyone with little planning and preparation, but the benefits can last a lifetime.

The Effects of Healthy Cooking to Your Weight Loss Program

    To contact us Click HERE
In this fast-paced, eat-and-run, massive-portion-sized-culture, maintaining a healthy weight can be very difficult, much so with losing weight. If you have tried dieting before, you may find that they are very ineffective in losing weight. However, do not be disheartened as there are small but powerful ways to avoid diet pitfalls, and at the same time, allow you to develop a healthier relationship with food.

    Photo: greggavedon.com

The key to successful, healthy weight loss is by shifting to healthy cooking and doing regular exercises. These two must go hand-in-hand if you want your weight loss program to succeed. Extreme diets, as well as unhealthy lifestyle choices can leave you cranky and starving. You can develop good eating habits and win your battle with the bulge.

Major steps for a healthy weight loss include foregoing eating out and instead, cooking and eating healthy meals at home. Foods sold at diners and restaurants are full of calories and fats that can be very harmful to your body, and gives you more weight. The same goes for sodas and other snack foods. Preparing a healthy meal by broiling, steaming, blanching or eating raw fruits and vegetables, and drinking lots of water are better alternatives.

Aside from introducing healthy foods to your diet, you also need to combine this with weight loss exercises such as aerobic or strength training for your weight loss program to be effective and successful.

    A Healthier Daily Diet

    To contact us Click HERE
If you are looking for ways to make your daily diet that little bit healthier then the good news is that there are plenty of small changes you can make today that will make a real difference to your health in the long run.

You don’t necessarily need to completely overhaul your diet and live off mung beans and seaweed for the rest of your life in order to become a bit healthier, you can simply swap a few foods here and there for healthier alternatives, in order to make a big difference to your diet overall.

First of all, try swapping white or brown bread for wholemeal bread, which has less sugars and more long lasting energy in the form of complex carbohydrates which will keep you going for longer and therefore mean you are less likely to snack on sugary or fatty foods. You could also try bread with seeds, such as granary bread, for added Omega nutrition as well as added taste!
When you cook, swap your usual oil for a low calorie cooking spray to instantly cut down on unnecessary calories. It will barely affect the taste and you can ensure your meals still taste delicious by flavouring with plenty of herbs and spices, as opposed to fats and salt. If you eat out, a good rule of thumb if you are unsure what would be healthiest to order from the menu is to choose dishes with tomato-based sauces over creamy or cheesy sauces. These dishes will be naturally lower in fat and calories and tomatoes are brilliant for all round health and nutrition.
Choose natural cottage cheese over full fat cheddar. Where possible, avoid artificially reduced fat products as these can often be higher in sugar and sweeteners to compensate, and choose naturally lower fat and calorie products instead.

    Is Fat ‘Bad’?

    To contact us Click HERE
The simple answer to the question in this article’s title is no, fat is not bad. It is true, however, that not all fats were created equal, and some fats are best avoided, whereas others can be actively included in your diet.

    Photo: lowcarbeatingplan.com

A typical, healthy Mediterranean diet contains many foods that are high in unsaturated fat. Unsaturated fat should form part of every healthy person’s diet and is essential for things like healthy nails, hair and skin, as well as general health.

Foods that contain unsaturated fats vital for our health include avocadoes, olives, nuts, seeds and the staple of Mediterranean cooking: olive oil. Choose spreads with olive oil for your bread and spread thinly for a healthier breakfast. For additional benefits from your bread, choose a wheat germloaf from Hovis bread.
Saturated fat is generally found in greasy, fried food and junk food such as crisps, milk chocolate, burgers and so on. Limit this food as much as possible as it has very few health benefits and too much saturated fat is thought to cause a myriad of healthy problems, as well as an increased likelihood of obesity.
When cooking, think like a Mediterranean and stir fry fresh vegetables in a little olive oil, rather than deep frying chips. For protein, fish such as salmon is full of nutrients including essential Omega fatty acids. Don’t be fooled by the name – this is another type of fat that is very good for you.
Swap saturated fats for unsaturated fats wherever possible to improve your diet but remember that you should still aim to have plenty of foods that are naturally low in fat, such as fresh fruit and vegetables and grain-based foods such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes; these types of foods should make up the main bulk of your diet.
