Some of the foods you probably have in your home can be used to create fabulous recipes that you may have never thought of. And there are plenty of recipes for using up things you already have in that are past their best, so it’s a great way to be frugal with your food as well!
For example, if you have a loaf of bread that is past its best but not mouldy (perhaps just a little too hard for sandwiches), it can be used to make a delicious bread and butter pudding, with sultanas and other basic ingredients that don’t cost a lot but taste delicious! White bread is generally considered best for puddings, but if you want to be that little bit healthier, you can try Best of Both for the taste and texture of white but the wholegrain goodness of wholemeal.
Another great way to create tasty dishes from ingredients you already have in the home is to use tomatoes when they have started to go slightly too soft for salads or sandwiches, to make sauces for pasta dishes. Slightly soft tomatoes actually work better for making sauces than firmer ones, so you can create a wonderfully flavourful sauce for your Bolognese or penne pasta at very little cost. For soups, use vegetables that are still edible but are not super fresh, and use cheap cuts of meat for hearty broths, stews and casseroles.
Experiment with what you already have in the cupboards, fridge and freezers to open up a whole new range of tasty and wallet-friendly recipes that the whole family will enjoy!
